NEAMCO had its origins as Northern Engine Reconditioning Co (NERCO) which was established in 1975 by Cairns businessman Ray Fry, who is also well-known for his Norship refit, repair and maintenance business for all types of vessels.
The Fry family’s involvement in Cairns industry dates back to the late 1940s when Ray’s father, Richard, founded NQEA (North Queensland Engineers & Agents), an engineering supply company that expanded into shipbuilding and repairs in the early 1960s.
Ray Fry worked for his father at NQEA before founding NERCO which forged a highly respected name in Australia and Papua New Guinea with its best-practice diesel and petrol engine reconditioning operation in Liberty St, Cairns.
Customers in the mining, marine, industrial and agricultural sectors took advantage of the company’s reconditioning services. In 1991, NERCO became an approved supplier to the Department of Defence through its work for the Australian Navy.
NERCO was acquired by US diesel engine giant Cummins in 1996 but re-acquired by the Fry family in 2019 and revitalised to establish NEAMCO which continues the founding company’s reputation for providing top quality work at a cost effective price.
